Gaia First is extremely proud to announce that it has been accredited to take part in the UNOC (United Nations Ocean Conference) to be held in Nice in 2025. This global event, dedicated to protecting the oceans and promoting marine sustainability, will bring together political leaders, scientists, experts and civil society players from all over the world.
This accreditation testifies to our ongoing commitment to preserving the environment and to actively contributing to discussions and actions for a more sustainable future for our oceans. On this occasion, Gaia First will have the opportunity to present its flagship projects, such as:
Guardians of Gaia (Education): In collaboration with UNESCO, this programme combines the traditional ecological knowledge of indigenous communities (ITEK) with modern science to create an inclusive and immersive environmental education framework. It enables communities and young people to preserve biodiversity through practical and engaging activities. The programme trains the next generation of leaders to understand the interconnectedness of global challenges, while fostering enriched cross-cultural perspectives that inspire holistic approaches and sustainable solutions.
Mare Nostrum: This Mediterranean expedition, part of the Guardians of Gaia initiative, brings together a team of students and researchers from a wide range of disciplines and nationalities. During a three-week voyage with stopovers in 15 countries, the participants work with local communities to develop and strengthen conservation programmes, such as Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The project aims to raise awareness of the need to protect the Mediterranean and promote concrete action to preserve this vital ecosystem.
Waste 2 Energy (Innovation in waste management): This UNESCO-accredited initiative is revolutionising waste management by transforming non-recycled petroleum-based materials - such as plastics, fishing nets, tyres and synthetic textiles - into clean, low-carbon energy. Gaia First champions circular economy solutions that not only combat pollution but also free communities from the health risks, environmental degradation and economic damage caused by poorly managed waste.
We're looking forward to representing Gaia First at UNOC 2025 and carrying our values of innovation, solidarity and protection of marine biodiversity high. This global event is a crucial step in promoting responsible ocean management and raising awareness of the crucial issues involved in preserving the oceans.
Stay tuned to follow our preparations and actions during this key event in 2025!
